In a recent event at the Laos-Australia Renewable Energy Day, stakeholders gathered to explore the promising prospects of renewable energy in Laos. Hosted by the Australian Embassy to Laos and facilitated by EnergyLab, Partnerships for Infrastructure, and AustCham, the event served as a platform to delve into the technological, economic, and societal dimensions of renewable energy transition.
Director General Mr Chantho Milattanapheng from the Department of Energy Efficiency and Promotion, Ministry of Energy and Mines, highlighted Laos’ ambitious plans to embrace renewable energy sources such as wind, solar power, pumped hydro energy storage, and green hydrogen. The event featured insights from both local and international experts, including institutions like CSIRO and the Australian National University.
The private sector’s role and challenges in clean energy were outlined by local Lao businesses, while international entities like the International Finance Corporation and the Global Green Growth Initiative discussed strategies to bolster investment in renewable energy projects.
Deputy Ambassador of Australia to the Lao PDR, Dan Heldon, emphasized the transformative potential of renewable energy, citing its capacity to generate employment, attract investment, and foster export opportunities. Collaboration among government, development partners, communities, and the private sector was underscored as crucial for maximizing the benefits of renewable energy in Laos.
The event also recognized initiatives through the Clean Energy Awards. Local organizations like Loca, SNV, and MyBanLao were acknowledged for their contributions to advancing clean energy technologies and promoting inclusivity in the energy transition.
