JERA Co., Inc. (JERA), Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (Tohoku), and Itochu Corporation are selected as primary operators for an offshore wind power project in Akita Prefecture.
The project is reported to be one of the largest projects in Japan. “Through the consortium organised by JERA, the four entities will take charge of the development, construction, and operations of the projects in Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City. All parties will generate new synergies as a commitment to long-term, stable, and efficient wind power,” said the firm in a note.
Adhering to the “Opinion of the Council on the Sea Area Offshore Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City in Akita Prefecture”, the agreement focuses on advancing on the principles of coexistence and co-prosperity with local communities and the fishing industry.
Moreover, the firm endorses strong cooperation with residents and other stakeholders for the development of the local economy and the transition through decarbonisation.
It may be noted that under the Act on Promoting the Utilisation of Sea Areas for the Development of Marine Renewable Energy Power Generation Facilities,the firms were selected as the Project’s business operator by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (“METI”) and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (“MLIT”).
