The International Energy Agency (IEA) has announced its plans to establish a Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore. This marks a significant milestone as the organization’s first venture beyond its headquarters in Paris, France and it is expected to commence operations in the latter half of 2024.
This move reflects the IEA’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving energy transformation across Southeast Asia and beyond. In a collaborative effort with the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry, the regional office aims to bolster energy security and facilitate the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy systems. Its mandate includes a wide range of activities, including providing policy guidance, offering technical assistance, and delivering training and capacity-building initiatives. IEA aims to scale up renewable energy deployment, advance clean energy technologies, and promote cross-border energy trade and investments, thus playing a play a pivotal role in driving the region’s energy transition agenda forward.
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stressed upon the strategic importance of establishing a presence in Southeast Asia, citing the region’s dynamic growth and its critical role in shaping the global energy landscape. Birol expressed the IEA’s readiness to support countries in the region as they strive to ensure affordable, reliable, and modern energy access for all citizens.
