Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER), headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has recently announced the commencement of commercial operations at the recently upgraded New Nikaho Kogen Wind Farm in Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture, by its wholly owned subsidiary, J-Wind Co., Ltd.
The original Nikaho Kogen Wind Farm, which began operating in December 2001, has undergone a significant upgrade. This upgrade involved replacing the existing 15 wind turbines, each with an individual unit output of 1,650 kW, with six wind turbines of one of the largest classes in Japan, boasting individual unit outputs of 4,300 kW. With this transformation, the site has been renamed as the New Nikaho Kogen Wind Farm. It will leverage the abundant wind resources available in the area, known for its favorable conditions year-round, while ensuring harmony with the local community.
Presently, J-POWER operates wind power generation facilities at 29 locations across the country, with 24 in operation, three under construction, and two undergoing facility upgrades. The total capacity of these facilities stands at 766,192 kW, inclusive of the two locations slated for upgrades. In Akita Prefecture alone, J-POWER operates three locations, including the New Nikaho Kogen Wind Farm and the already operational Nikaho Daini Wind Farm, with a combined capacity of 82,250 kW, contributing to the region’s renewable energy portfolio.
The J-POWER Group is proactively modernizing facilities at aging sites. As per the firm, the company remains committed to advancing sustainable development and ensuring the reliable operation of wind power generation and other renewable energy projects. These efforts align with the company’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality as outlined in the J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050, introduced in February 2021.
