The Laos government signed a concession agreement with CGN Laos Taven Power Sole Co., Ltd. for the construction of Phase I of a 1,000 megawatt (MW) solar farm in the northern districts of Xay and Namor, Oudomxay province. This project is a step in advancing renewable energy efforts for both Laos and China.
The solar farm, located near the Laos-China border, aligns with Laos’s goal to increase renewable energy consumption to 30 percent by 2025. This initiative is part of the broader Northern Clean Energy Connection project, which aims to bolster energy security and support Laos’s renewable energy development plan.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Chansaveng Boungnong, highlighted the importance of clean energy in powering the 500kV transmission line that connects Laos with China. He also noted that this project forms a key part of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, which aims to enhance regional energy interconnection and cooperation.
The solar farm is expected to contribute to local economic development, offer more efficient energy sources, and reduce carbon emissions. It will also strengthen the relationship between Laos and China. Zhang Chaoqun, President of CGN Energy International Holdings Co., Ltd., emphasized that the project will not only boost economic cooperation between the two nations but will also be beneficial for energy generation, consumers, and will support electricity exports.
Additionally, the agreement supports the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation scheme, with plans to develop further clean energy projects, including wind and solar farms, across Oudomxay, Phongsaly, and Luang Namtha provinces. The total installed capacity for these projects is anticipated to reach 10 million kilowatts. This collaboration highlights a growing drive towards renewable energy in the region, aiming to provide a sustainable energy future and foster international cooperation.
