The South Korean tech giant LG Electronics has joined RE 100 Climate group, which is the global corporate renewable energy initiative committed to 100% renewable electricity by 2040.
LG has pledged to transition its entire operations to 100% renewable energy by 2050 with short-term targets of 60 percent by 2030 and 90 percent by 2040. Further,the company plans to expand its renewable energy sources by installing high-efficiency solar panels at its facilities.
Among its ongoing eco-initiatives it is constructing a solar power station in Changwon’s LG Smart Park together with the regional energy provider GS EPS, scheduled to be completed by 2025.
Last yea,in July, LG had aimed to switch solely to renewable energy, starting with 60% by 2030, 90% by 2040, and 100% by 2050.The South Korean technology company has also been using electricity generated on-site in its offices and production facilities in Seoul, North America and India.
Other such green initiatives include solar panel installation on its buildings, the use of power purchase agreements that enable businesses to buy electricity directly from suppliers, the use of Renewable Energy Credit certificates, and participation in the Green Premium program in Korea, LG’s home market, to buy clean energy directly from the Korea Electric Power Corporation.
It may be recalled that IT service provider Kakao had also joined RE100 initiative,recently.The KakaoTalk messenger operator aims to replace 60% of its electricity consumption in its offices and data centers with renewable energy by 2030. Moreover, Kakao’s Jejuba Island headquarters is already running on 100 percent renewable energy.
