The Philippines Department of Energy (DoE) has amended the auction schedule for the upcoming 11.6 GW green energy auction. As per the new schedule, the auction has been postponed to May 19 from the previously assigned date of May 12. Hence, after the registration of qualified suppliers, the evaluation of those applications will be carried out between May 22 and May 24, which was previously marked from May 15-17.The DoE will publish the names of the qualified suppliers on June 1 instead of May 24 and pre-bid conference will be held on June 6, 2023.
As per the DoE, those who fail to comply with the registration requirements can file a request for reconsideration in two calendar days.
The energy department invited interested parties to take part in the second round of the country’s Green Energy Auction (GEA) programme in late March. The new auction, called the Green Energy Auction 2 (GEA-2), will offer a total capacity of 11,600 MW, including 3,600 MW for 2024, 3,600 MW for 2025, and 4,400 MW for 2026.
The Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP) aims at supporting and facilitating immediate and timely investments in new or additional renewable energy capacities to ensure provision of adequate supply and competitive rates of electricity in the country. It also aims at ensuring transparent and competitive selection of renewable energy facilities to achieve reasonable rates and encourage the renewable energy players in the system.
The Philippines held its first green energy auction last year in the June, 2022, awarding 1,490 MW of solar projects and 374 MW of wind projects for a success rate of about 98.35%. More than 20 bidders participated in the auction and local developer Solar Philippines ended up being the biggest winner as it secured 70% of all awards.
Philippines has a target of having 35% share of renewables in the energy mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
