Renovaveis SA, a prominent Portuguese renewable energy company, announced a milestone in its global expansion. The company has secured a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a new solar power project in Japan. This agreement pertains to a 44-megawatt solar plant that will be established in Fukushima Prefecture, a region known for its efforts in renewable energy development following the 2011 nuclear disaster.
The details of the deal reveal that the energy generated from this project will be sold to a major technology company, though Renovaveis SA has chosen not to disclose the name of this off-taker. This strategic move reflects a broader trend of technology firms investing in or partnering with renewable energy projects to meet their sustainability goals.
The solar power plant will be constructed on a former golf course, a location that aligns with Japan’s efforts to repurpose land for environmental benefits. Renovaveis SA anticipates that the project will be operational by 2025. This timeline fits well with Japan’s ambitious renewable energy targets, which include achieving a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050. As part of this commitment, Japan aims to significantly expand its renewable energy infrastructure. Specifically, by 2030, the country plans to have around 10 gigawatts of onshore wind power and 43 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity.
Renovaveis SA’s investment in Japan highlights its growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region. The company currently has over 1.5 gigawatts of committed solar capacity across the region, demonstrating its robust presence and commitment to global renewable energy efforts. This latest PPA further solidifies Renovaveis SA’s role as a key player in the international renewable energy market.
