Under the state’s blueprint, Sarawak Energy will increase its renewable energy capacity to 15GW by 2035. The position made for the state would be a green energy powerhouse. The case, in this sense, would be for Sarawak to export sustainable power to neighboring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia.
Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, delivered these visions in a keynote speech during the Sarawak Future Forum. He emphasized Sarawak’s leadership in clean energy production, particularly through its existing hydropower capacity.
Abang Johari highlighted green hydrogen as part of Sarawak’s clean energy strategy. Sarawak eyes to be one of the pioneers in becoming a main exporter of hydrogen while seeing the target export markets come primarily from South Korea and Japan as these have net-zero strategies.
Sarawak is building infrastructure to transport and store hydrogen. This would allow the state to export hydrogen effectively to international markets. Abang Johari said that,”as the state is close to key Asian economies, Sarawak will be a vital supply source of clean hydrogen. This would further diversify the economy of Sarawak”.
The Premier further discussed how Sarawak could pivot into the green economy. This will ensure sustainable development but, on the other hand, minimize the damage to the environment. Resource depletion as well as carbon emission reduction have been the approach that the state of Sarawak has undertaken towards the realization of this dream but still with an increase in economics.
Sarawak is tapping into hydropower, solar, and biomass as sources of renewable energy in building long-term economic and ecological resilience. “This strategy has set financial success on the same course as environmental responsibility, which actually establishes a foundation for the future,” said Chief Minister Abang Johari.
