SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has arranged funding to expand its battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Philippines. The company stated that the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and China Banking Corporation will fund the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS Phase 2, while BPI and Banco de Oro Unibank, Inc. (BDO) will finance the 40MW Binga BESS.
The new storage facilities will be built at existing hydroelectric power plants. Magat BESS Phase 2 will be set up at the Magat hydro plant in Isabela, and Binga BESS will be located at the Binga hydro plant in Benguet. Both projects are expected to be completed by 2026.
The contracts for engineering, procurement, and construction of these storage units have been awarded to GEDI China Energy, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group. SNAP previously launched its first battery storage system, the 24MW Magat BESS, which started operating in January 2024. This facility is currently used for ancillary services in the reserve market.
Various renewable energy projects are also in development across the Philippines. The 100MW Alaminos Solar Power Plant in Laguna, managed by AC Energy, and the 72MW Arayat-Mexico Solar Farm in Pampanga, developed by Citicore Power and ACEN, are among the ongoing initiatives. Masdar has conducted feasibility studies for floating solar power in Laguna de Bay, exploring potential large-scale solar installations.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has introduced battery storage projects to support grid stability. A 40MW battery storage system has been installed in Luzon, with further projects planned for Visayas and Mindanao. Additionally, the Department of Energy (DOE) is reviewing multiple proposals for offshore wind farms, with developers showing interest in areas such as Ilocos Norte and Guimaras.
