Sunrise Shares Energy Sdn Bhd (SSE), through its subsidiary Sunrise Megabatt Sdn Bhd (SMSB), has signed a distribution agreement with Zhejiang Jinko Energy Storage Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Jinko Solar Co Ltd. This agreement allows SSE to distribute Jinko Energy Storage’s battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Malaysia.
Jinko Solar is a global manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules and energy storage systems. It serves over 4,000 customers in 200 countries. The company is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of about RM45.8 billion and the New York Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of about RM5.6 billion.
Under the agreement, Sunrise Megabatt will procure and distribute Jinko Energy Storage’s BESS products. These include the SunGiga and SunTera series, which are designed for a range of energy storage applications in Malaysian industries. Battery energy storage systems are critical for balancing electricity supply and demand, especially as Malaysia continues its shift toward renewable energy. Such systems enable the storage of surplus energy generated by renewable sources like solar and wind, making it available when needed.
Malaysia has been developing its renewable energy sector in recent years. One of the country’s prominent initiatives is the Large-Scale Solar 2 (LSS2) under the Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry Transition Roadmap (MESI) Towards Affordable Renewable Energy Initiative (MenTARI).The program has contributed to Malaysia’s installed solar capacity of over 1.7 GW as of 2023.
Another project is the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam, which has an installed capacity of 2,400 MW. It is one of Southeast Asia’s largest hydroelectric facilities and supports the country’s renewable energy goals. Additionally, Malaysia is working on smaller-scale community solar projects to expand access to clean energy in rural areas.
