Discussions primarily centered on the implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), a collaborative effort that includes Canada as a member, took place between Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Tran Hong Ha and Canadian Ambassador for Climate Change Catherine Stewart and Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Shawn Perry Steil in Hanoi.
Ha underscored Vietnam’s commitment to developing renewable energy and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period and beyond (PDP VIII).
Vietnam stressed the importance of receiving support in various aspects of renewable energy development, including scientific expertise, technological advancements, and human resources. Deputy PM Ha emphasized the need for clear cooperation mechanisms between governments, the private sector, businesses, and international financial institutions to effectively implement JETP.
Vietnam expressed its hope that investors would propose concrete projects, address legal challenges, and contribute to shaping national policies and mechanisms. Canada’s progressive stance on climate change response and a green transition, particularly exemplified by initiatives like the “Global Carbon Pricing Challenge,” received a commendation from Deputy PM Ha.
Vietnam looks forward to Canada’s expertise and support in sharing experiences, methodologies, and carbon pricing tools to aid in establishing a robust carbon market. Ambassador Stewart echoed Vietnam’s sentiments regarding JETP implementation, viewing cooperation with Vietnam in this endeavor as a potential model for fostering broader environmental and climate change collaboration. Additionally, she expressed Canada’s commitment to assisting Vietnam in its renewable energy development efforts and highlighted the importance of cooperation in addressing marine waste, particularly plastic waste, aligning with Vietnam’s ambitious goals for sustainability.
